Every Mill Valley project we build comes with a story. Here is what our clients say in their own words.
What Is the Best Driveway Material for a Larkspur Home?
The best driveway material for a Larkspur home depends on budget, look, and the lot. Pavers offer the best curb appeal and are easy to repair, concrete lasts longest and looks clean, stamped concrete adds character, and gravel is the lowest-cost option. On a Larkspur lot, drainage and grading matter as much as looks.
Pavers run roughly $15 to $30 per square foot installed and carry a service life past thirty years. Their real advantage is reversibility. A settled section can be lifted, the base corrected, and the same stones put back with no visible seam. On a lot where a tree root may eventually lift something, that matters.
Poured concrete sits at about $8 to $18 and gives the longest single-pour lifespan with the cleanest lines. The trade is that hairline cracking arrives eventually and every repair patch stays visible for good.
Stamped concrete lands near $12 to $22 and buys character, pressed to read as stone or brick without stone pricing. It needs resealing every few years, and on any sloped approach the sealer needs a no-slip additive worked in.
Gravel is the budget option at roughly $3 to $8 per square foot, and in Larkspur it deserves more consideration than it usually gets. It drains freely, it suits a wooded setting visually, and critically it is permeable, which means it does not seal off the root zone of nearby trees. It does migrate and needs regrading and topping every couple of years, and on a steep approach that migration is constant and downhill.
Now the part that decides your actual number, because in Larkspur the lot matters more than the material and the town gives you three very different lots.
On the ridgeline approaches through Hillview and Greenbrae, grading, drainage, and grip carry the day. Winter runoff wants to sheet down the slope, and left alone it either scours the surface or works underneath and hollows out the base. Grip is equally non-negotiable, because a steep approach that looks beautiful in July and turns slick in February has failed at its actual job. Permeable pavers are worth serious consideration on these lots, letting runoff drain through the surface rather than accelerate down it.
Near the ferry and along the creek corridor the problem inverts. The ground is flat, low, and slow to drain, so the driveway is not fighting gravity, it is fighting saturation. Base depth and drainage design decide whether the surface stays level, because a base sitting in water is not a base.
Then the canyons, where a Larkspur driveway becomes a different project entirely. In Baltimore Canyon and Madrone Canyon the driveway runs through standing redwood forest, and that sets three constraints at once. Excavation has to work around surface roots rather than cut through them, because severing a mature redwood's root plate to seat a base is not a decision you can walk back. Permeability becomes a genuine design goal rather than a nice-to-have, since sealing a wide impermeable surface over a root zone starves the tree of water and air. And the surface will take constant needle and leaf fall year-round, which means a material that handles organic debris and shaded damp without staining or growing algae. This is the one setting in Marin where we will sometimes steer a client toward gravel or permeable pavers over poured concrete, and the trees are the reason.
That is why we build from the base up regardless of which Larkspur you live in. Excavation to depth, geotextile fabric, and a compacted subbase spec'd for vehicle loads rather than foot traffic, with drainage designed in before the surface is chosen. Steven built the business on the idea that a driveway should perform as well in twenty years as it does on day one, and the only route to that is doing the invisible part properly.
A driveway also rarely stands alone here. On a ridgeline the cut usually needs support, which is why so many Larkspur driveways get built alongside engineered retaining walls, and the finish frequently ties into concrete walkways and the surrounding patio work. When more of the property is in play it all gets planned as one full outdoor build.
We install every one of these materials, which means we have no reason to steer you toward one. We walk your approach, look at the grade, the drainage, the trees, and the house, and tell you honestly what fits. Thirty years on Marin terrain, California C-27 license number 1134876, fully insured, two-year workmanship warranty on every driveway.
How Novara Builds Driveways in Larkspur
-
Site Survey and Grade Analysis
We measure the approach, read the slope or the standing water, check for root zones, and design the driveway in 3D with drainage planned first.
-
Excavation and Subbase
Most driveways fail because the subbase was cut thin. We excavate to depth, lay geotextile fabric, and compact a base built for vehicle loads.
-
Drainage and Installation
Drainage built in, not added after. Pavers, permeable pavers, concrete, or gravel set with proper edge restraints and joint specification.
-
Sealing and Walkthrough
Sealed where appropriate, with a no-slip additive on sloped finishes. Two-year workmanship warranty activated.

On every driveway
A driveway is the most demanding surface on any property. It carries vehicle weight daily, sheds water through every winter storm, and connects the house, the garage, and the street. Larkspur asks three different things of it depending on where you live. On the ridgelines it has to hold its line against gravity and runoff. Down on the flats near the creek it has to stay level over ground that holds water long after the rain stops. And in the canyons it has to do all of that without killing the redwoods it runs beneath, which means root-aware excavation and a serious conversation about permeability before anyone picks a material. Most failures anywhere have nothing to do with the surface material. They come from a subbase cut thin to save days, or drainage treated as an afterthought instead of a starting point. Novara has been building on this terrain since 1998, founded by Esteban Garcia and run today by his son Steven Garcia Ochoa, with more than 400 completed projects across Marin and Sonoma. We engineer driveways around the specific slope, soil, water path, and tree canopy of each property before excavation begins. Done right, the surface is the easy part.

How long have you built driveways in Marin?
Thirty years. Novara was founded in 1998 by Esteban Garcia and is run today by his son, Steven Garcia Ochoa. Ridgeline approaches, flat creekside lots, and canyon driveways are all routine work for us.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California C-27 license number 1134876, with general liability and workers compensation coverage. You are welcome to verify the license before we start.
What materials do you offer?
Pavers, permeable pavers, poured concrete, stamped concrete, and gravel. We install all of them, so the recommendation comes from your property rather than from what we prefer to sell.
Can you build a driveway on a steep, canyon, or creekside Larkspur lot?
All three. On the ridgelines we design for slope, drainage, and traction, often pairing with a retaining wall. On low ground we start with drainage. In the canyons we design around the root zones.
Will a new driveway harm my redwoods?
Not if it is built correctly. We map root zones before excavating, hand-work around significant roots, and often recommend permeable surfaces so water and air still reach the root zone rather than being sealed off.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes. We come to your Larkspur property, walk the approach, talk through materials, and follow up with a 3D design preview and a written estimate.
Which material lasts longest?
Pavers, and they have the added advantage of being repairable stone by stone. Concrete has a long life too, but every repair on a concrete driveway stays visible.
What is your warranty?
Two years on workmanship, covering settling, base failure, joint integrity on pavers, and surface delamination on concrete. Manufacturer warranties on materials transfer separately.
Why does base preparation matter?
The base carries the vehicle load, not the surface. On a slope gravity works against it daily. On a low lot saturation undermines it. A thin base fails either way, just differently.
