Every Mill Valley project we build comes with a story. Here is what our clients say in their own words.
How Much Does a Paver Patio Cost in Larkspur?
A professionally installed paver patio in Larkspur typically costs $10 to $40 per square foot installed, or roughly $4,000 to $16,000 for most residential projects. Natural stone and travertine run higher, and site conditions on the lot can move the number more than the material choice does.
Concrete pavers are where most Marin patios land, roughly $10 to $18 per square foot installed. They are the most forgiving choice, they come in enough colors and formats to suit almost any house, and any single stone can be lifted and reset years later.
Clay brick runs about $14 to $22 and ages better than anything else in the category. The color is fired through the body rather than applied to the surface, so two decades of weather deepen it rather than wear it off.
Porcelain sits near $18 to $28 and is the low-maintenance pick. It resists staining, which matters more than you would think on a property with heavy leaf and needle fall.
Natural stone and travertine occupy the premium tier at roughly $25 to $40 and up. Every piece is cut individually and the variation is the point. On a Larkspur home with real architecture, stone is often the only material that reads as part of the house rather than something set down next to it.
Size works in your favor. Excavation setup and mobilization cost the same at 200 square feet as at 600, so the per-foot number drops as the patio grows. Going from small to mid-size is usually the best value on the whole estimate.
Now the part that actually sets your number, and in Larkspur it depends entirely on which of the town's three terrains your property sits on.
Near the ferry and along the creek corridor, the ground is flat and low and slow to shed water. A patio built there without real excavation, a compacted base, and a drainage plan will heave and settle within a few wet winters, because saturated soil under a patio behaves nothing like the dry compacted base it started as.
On the ridgeline lots through Hillview and Greenbrae there is no level ground to begin with. The patio starts with regrading, and frequently with an engineered retaining wall to hold the cut and create the terrace in the first place. On a steep parcel that wall can approach the cost of the patio it makes possible.
And then the canyons, which is where a Larkspur patio stops resembling anything in a national pricing guide. In Baltimore Canyon and Madrone Canyon, the patio is going into standing redwood forest, and the trees set the terms. Surface roots run through the top layer of soil in every direction, and cutting through a mature redwood root plate to make excavation easier is not a repairable decision. We hand-excavate around significant roots, adjust the patio footprint to work with what is there, and sometimes raise the grade slightly rather than dig down. That takes longer and costs more than machine work on an open lot, and it is the difference between a patio with trees and a patio where the trees die four years later.
Shade changes the material conversation too. A canyon patio stays damp longer after rain, collects constant needle and leaf fall, and sees very little drying sun. Joint stabilization matters more, porcelain and dense stone outperform porous material, and the drainage has to actually move water rather than let it sit. A patio spec that works beautifully on a sunny Larkspur flat will grow algae in a canyon within two seasons.
Either way, the base is the entire game. We excavate to proper depth, lay geotextile fabric, and compact a gravel base spec'd for the soil we find, with drainage designed to move water off the surface and away from the house. Pavers then go down on a polymeric sand bed with real edge restraints.
The installs that fail skip that. Pavers set on a thin sand layer over native soil look correct through one dry summer, and the first saturated winter begins the settling. By year three the joints have opened and the surface has waves in it. A bad base cannot be repaired, only rebuilt.
Steven puts it simply. The lowest patio bid in Marin is almost always the one that skipped the base work, and in a canyon it is often the one that skipped the root work too. We would rather build it right once and back it with a two-year workmanship warranty. Thirty years on this terrain, California C-27 license number 1134876, fully insured.

2-Year Warranty
On every patio
Nearly every patio failure traces back to the layer nobody sees, and Larkspur offers three different ways to get that layer wrong. The low creekside lots hold water long after a storm, which saturates a base that was never compacted to handle it. The ridgeline lots move soil downhill, so a patio without proper grading and support drifts out of level. And the redwood canyons add a problem no other Marin town has at this scale, where excavating carelessly around surface roots can kill a tree that took a century to grow, and deep shade keeps a patio damp and leaf-covered in a way that punishes the wrong material and the wrong jointing. Novara has been building on this terrain since 1998, founded by Esteban Garcia and run today by his son Steven Garcia Ochoa, and we hold the same base spec on a small canyon patio that we hold on a multi-thousand square foot estate install. Same depth. Same fabric. Same compaction. The visible part is what you bought. The invisible part is why it lasts.

How long have you built patios in Marin?
Thirty years. Novara was founded in 1998 by Esteban Garcia and is run today by his son, Steven Garcia Ochoa. This soil and this climate are what we have built on the entire time.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California C-27 license number 1134876, with general liability and workers compensation coverage. You are welcome to verify the license before we start.
What patio materials do you offer?
Concrete pavers, clay brick, porcelain, flagstone, natural stone, and travertine. In a shaded canyon we lean toward denser, less porous material that resists algae and staining.
Can you build a patio on a sloped, creekside, or redwood-canyon Larkspur lot?
All three. On the ridgelines we regrade and often add a retaining wall to create the terrace. On low creekside ground we start with drainage. In the canyons we design the footprint around existing roots.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes. We come to your Larkspur property, walk the space, talk through materials, and follow up with a 3D design preview and a written estimate. No charge and no pressure.
What affects the price most?
Site conditions, usually more than material. Regrading on a ridgeline lot, drainage work on a low one, or hand excavation around redwood roots can each move the number further than the gap between pavers and stone.
What is your warranty?
Two years on workmanship, covering settling, base failure, joint integrity, and edge restraint. Manufacturer warranties on materials transfer to you separately.
How long will the patio last?
A properly based patio stays level for decades. Pavers can also be lifted and reset individually if a root eventually moves one or you need access underneath, which no poured surface allows.
